The school sounds awful. Using “dress code” as window dressing for racial discrimination is a real problem. I used to teach at a school where the admin/staff were mostly white and the students mostly black. One young woman came to class one day with a halo of fuzz instead of tidy platinum braids. It turns out her course director told her to change her hair, on pain of suspension, because platinum is not “natural” for a Black woman.
