Perhaps one of the reasons people are so hostile to marketing is that it is something we mostly notice in the negative. If we see an advert we find funny, or benefit from a smart piece of content marketing, we perceive it as entertaining or useful. It’s only when the message or product is objectionable we identify it as “marketing” — so our unconscious bias is “marketing is bad” when we really mean “bad marketing is bad”.
